Unsophisticated sophisticates
Real life is demanding, that’s why it is ignored.
There seems to be a section of society populated with gullible conformists who believe many of the manufactured narratives designed to manage society.
Most are the credentialed products of universities. The laptop class of professionals who operate the corporations, institutions and key organizations.
Their worldview is comprised of stories which are downloaded and stored as mental models. Adhering to these narratives can then devolve into belief systems that are placed beyond criticism. This in turn can easily degenerate into a kind of fanaticism.
Ideas like mass migration and the destruction of reliable energy sources are crazy and yet they are primarily in existence thanks to the efforts of this layer of society, the professionals who implement policies desired by the ruling class.
While some among them are cynically exploiting today’s fads for their own ends, many seem to be true believers.
How can they believe these things so completely? What is going on?
Rebels searching for causes
Most of today’s great crusades seem to have the same characteristics. They are easily downloaded and consumed, they are socially rewarded within some circles, and they are not immediately obvious as issues at all.
The most popular are preprepared to an almost comical degree and thoroughly focus-grouped to ensure minimal friction among their consumers.
Many even come with slogans attached. Diversity is our strength is every bit as artificial as two weeks to flatten the curve, but it goes down easily with no thought required, which is the point.
The ideas that stick are the ones most useful to demonstrate virtue. Showing off to your peers you are non-sexist, non-racist and non-homophobic helps secure your place in many professional hierarchies where visible in-group membership matters.
The most prized causes appear to be non-obvious where the conclusions are not reachable with the evidence available.
This confusing aspect makes many question some new idea or policy, but in the laptop class often triggers a sense of smugness that they see beyond the obvious to the obscure thanks to their impressive intellects. Criticism can then be dismissed as simplistic providing a rewarding sense of superiority.
Much of the above is evident in the belief systems of today’s professional classes.
Covid, diversity and climate
These qualities can be observed in the grand schemes that are destroying us.
Contemporary examples would be climate hysteria, the diversity industry and the Covid fiasco.
In each some narrative is downloaded uncritically, is not supported by observations we can easily make, and provides endless opportunity to condemn the inferiority of the less enlightened who question things.
Covid
During Covid we were spoon fed every aspect of the unfolding event by traditional media. No one had to think at all.
They provided statistics, experts, charts, videos, reenactments, fake debates, you name it. The media supplied everything and told us what to think.
Thanks to the barrage of statistics and emotive anecdotes it was easy at first to believe a deadly epidemic was occurring.
As critics emerged their concerns were instantly dismissed. Alternative treatments, issues with mRNA as a delivery mechanism, the lack of testing for the proposed substances. All these were ridiculed as ignorance. Annoyances proposed by people who didn’t grasp the deeper nature of the pandemic and its seriousness.
Masking became the perfect example of the thinking at play. Quoting studies that showed how useless they were only reinforced the smugness since the point wasn’t to prevent infection as such, but to herd the morons into more sensible behaviour because the masses need intelligent leadership.
Challenging the ineffectiveness of masking in public spaces missed the psychological purpose of the activity which the more capable understood, a perfect illustration of how easily captured the mid-range talent often is by sophistry that promises to deliver a brief flash of smugness when challenged.
Covid was a well-documented example of all the mechanisms that keep the laptop class hypnotized by other people’s ideas if they are presented with authority. It commandeered any critical functions they possessed and still does. It was truly pathetic to witness.
Diversity
Diversity is so comprehensively manufactured it comes supplied with slogans, PowerPoint slides and quotas.
It has been established in most Western nations in virtually every institution.
Many must sign some declaration to uphold diversity when they start a job. No thought is required to buy into it as to publicly oppose it is social and professional suicide.
As fractures appear they work to remind the faithful of the importance of DEI initiatives against all common sense.
When the uninitiated ask why we are not hiring based on competency they are pitied. They don’t get the real reasons for decline which is not the incompetence of diversity hires but deep-seated bigotry and hate for which egalitarian initiatives are a necessary corrective.
Imagine how much worse it would be if it were just white men running everything?
Failure, then, reinforces the original premise, and the strengths of diversity are being prevented by the askers of awkward questions.
The adherents of an obviously absurd idea can then toddle along believing they are winning even as the bridges collapse, the planes drop out of the sky and the world burns.
Climate
Climate initiatives are nonsense and based on manipulated science driven by computer modelling.
Models can prove anything, from global warming to global cooling and anything in between.
Climate hysteria comes packaged with complex sounding processes, heat maps, charts, actual maps with bits under water, NGOs galore, and the United Nations pushing hard along with every Western government. It is a technocrat’s dream.
Opposition comes from all quarters, not the least of which is none of us can perceive any change to climate whatsoever. Worse, those of us who can read can easily find a list of previous predictions that failed to materialize, from the ozone layer to the genocide of polar bears. Manhattan has still not been flooded and everything is the same as before.
The laptop class seem truly lost to climate hysteria. We are killing the planet. We must do more, much more, to prevent this calamity. If anything has become a middle-class religion in the West it is this.
The fanaticism is all around us, from recycling to the intentional destruction of reliable energy or even farmlands we rely on.
Attempts to introduce even basic common sense into this debate are met with blank stares and hysteria. Climate science is complex. It lends itself to the kind of patronizing lectures beloved of midwits everywhere.
Witness the standard dismissal when normal people complain the weather isn’t changing. Climate, we are arrogantly assured, is not weather.
There is an entire universe of assumed superiority behind such statements and nothing demonstrates better how the laptop class use sophistry to protect their precious worldview from being demolished by reality than abusing scientific concepts to obfuscate facts and diminish one’s critics.
To those who manufacture these narratives it must be like shooting fish in a barrel.
What to make of all this?
Does any of this matter? Yes it does. It is this section of society that ultimately puts in place the ruinous ideas of the ruling class.
They are in the corporate offices, the local councils and the schools. They are running the television stations and the publishing houses. They are captured by groupthink. Everyone they know thinks as they do. All criticism is easily dismissed.
Very little can penetrate this bubble. Except one thing.
Over time reality intrudes. Models should be updated to accommodate new findings and observations, but that is challenging when they have been uncritically downloaded to satisfy psychological needs.
Contrary evidence threatens one’s sense of self so scrutiny is avoided. When these avoidances ultimately fail some dig even deeper. Magical thinking seems to be everywhere.
The ultimate effect is either a reassessment of one’s worldview, or a psychotic break from reality. We see examples of the latter; Trump Derangement Syndrome is one well known borderline psychosis but there are others.
Multiculturalism has not materialized anywhere in the West. Many European cities are becoming no-go zones as different peoples assert themselves within our borders. Continued belief in this broken idea requires almost dysfunctional levels of faith to maintain it.
In European nations climate initiatives are making energy too expensive so industry is dying and people struggle to heat their homes. Any suggestion we may wish to reconsider commitments like Net Zero are met with hysterical protests and media-driven calls for even more stringent measures, not fewer.
Few developed nations have managed an honest reckoning of the Covid responses, from lockdowns to the rushed vaccines not to mention the blatant manipulation of data, information and events, all managed via an obviously compromised traditional media. The subject is forbidden since the enquiries would be conducted by the same element of society that drove them forward to begin with, a step too far for those who embrace falsehoods to get on in life.
We are presiding over a perfect storm of cowardice, bad ideas and delusion that will make itself felt soon and all of it caused by intellectually limited people in positions of authority whose antenna are always aimed at external approval and applause.
The laptop class are responsible for a lot of the decline we see around us and they cannot hide forever. Reality is coming for them and their mental models won’t help since they bear no relation to real life.
What then for the unsophisticated thinkers with delusions of superiority?

'The ultimate effect is either a reassessment of one’s worldview'
This is what happened to me, thanks to Covid, along with a lot of other people. Having your worldview turned upside down is disconcerting while it's happening, but if you can accept and acknowledge it, it's really freeing.
It's also humbling. It now becomes possible to think "What if I'm wrong?", rather than drowning in hubris like so many of our compatriots.
Big thumbs up on that one 👍
