You’re also right about the fear and weakness in the system. Propaganda is power, and without it power is deprived of its performance. With no currency for its explanatory myths, it simply evaporates.
State institutions do not vanish - I mean people have stopped believing in them. Non-state powers too. These systems of management cannot outpace with make-belief the chaos and disenchantment their policies have created.
The interesting times are upon us. The reality based community is not having it any more.
I think the recent performance of the police in quelling the demonstrations in London is a good example of the failure of institutions. It is becoming too visible even for those barely paying attention. Plus the number of quest workers who are clearly not onboard with the government's messaging.
To those using non-mainstream sources of info they were adding street videos quicker than they could remove them. Then there is the social media phenomenon of responses, a kind of video retort. Some even have responses to responses. So even when the original video is removed because it doesn't support a narrative, it often survives third-hand, embedded in some other persons video.
I am quite interested in what this is actually doing. It is actually closer to informed free speech of the broadsheet variety from yesteryear than anything the mainstream can now produce.
The material is often rough and shaky, but it provides multiple points of view with ease. In the case of the London situation you can see pro-Palestine material alongside pro-Israel, all mixed in with police action and polemics from interested parties.
I'm having a think about what this may do to discourse as we move away from the mainstream. I think it could change things.
Quite a few serious policemen are seriously aggrieved by the recent decisions taken against them by a weak state afraid of bad press. The power of the mainstream media is reducible to its continued influence on the people who still think it matters - politicians.
Optics is politics. If it will look bad on the front pages, they won’t do it. Even keeping basic order “looks bad”, as does prosecuting shoplifters or trying to organise some border control.
If you want an indication of how weak the management is, it is to be found in their terror of bad press.
It will be interesting to see if any political leader is permitted to emerge in this mess who realised they no longer have to care about the media.
I suspect not in the current cohort. But it could be the basis of a new movement or party. One that ignores the mainstream.
Trump just did this himself. He avoided the primary debate broadcast on cable, projected to have 10-20m views. He was interviewed by Tucker Carlson and it was released on Twitter at the same time and got 200m views in one day. A gamechanger.
And I have a few police officers in my family. The rank and file are tired of the Woke and being accused of racism. Such a system cannot last.

Since Covid I have realized a solid chunk of society never will wake up, but they will go along with the prevailing view. Depressing, but if true it does mean we are only fighting the active enemy, and they are small in numbers.
Winning then is us keeping each other informed and perhaps identifying the small number who are open to being informed and may just be ignorant.
