Congratulations! Your writing has had an important impact on me personally, and undoubtedly many others would say the same. Happy to see your Substack growing and receiving the attention it deserves!

Congratulations! I enjoy reading your posts and am considering canceling one or two of the subscriptions to other stacks I'm currently paying for. When I do, I will become a paid member of your stack. Your writing is very much worth paying for, and thank you continuing to make all or most of it free.

Thank you, you are very kind. I intend to make all or most of it free. It is just an option for people if they wish to pay. We are living through hard times.

Pledge activates when you turn on paid subs. It converts to a paid sub, and so would be the same as a paid sub (/yr/month/etc)

Thanks for the info. I did think this would happen.

Good work ! Some other writers I follow also offer the Buy Me a Coffee thing for those who can't commit to a monthly sub but as and when allows. I have had occasion to use that. Maybe you have to pay that platform though, so fair enough if not. Having just been hit with a truly massive council tax increase (HTF they get away with it or sleep at night is beyond me but that's another story....) I will need to see how I am fixed and then review my subs. Best of luck.

Please don't feel you must. These are hard times. I am grateful for any subscribers taking the time to read my work.

As for alternatives, I am toying with self-publishing a novel. That gives people way of paying a fairly modest amount as a one off.

That sounds a good plan. You are right that there are probably only a relatively few people on here who make substantial income, and the irony is that I bet several of them are already high-profile and wealthy enough already! Such is life.

Yes, that is life. I view Substack more as a way to find an audience than make cash.

That said, I do think Substack promote people with paid subscriptions activated. That is one of the reasons I am activating.

And I thank you for retaining the option of being a free subscriber, as I am retired and living on a "just enough" pension.

I absolutely get it. Don't sign up if you don't have the money as virtually everything will be available for free.

Good luck, I hope it works out well for you, can you do us aspiring substackers a favour and let us know it goes, i.e. if it really is possible for the little guy to earn an income from Substack?

I will do. My advice is simple, just start. As for making money, who knows? It is not easy. A handful make a lot of course.
